Nordic Ski update Feb 2014

Nordic Ski Update:  Life is good!  The Olympics have come and gone, the days are getting longer and the snow is better in the mountains than it has been all year.

We had five athletes from the Pacific Northwest on the US Nordic Ski team.  This is the beginning of more to come.  We have such a great Nordic ski community.  We have a Nordic Kids program, the Transition team and the junior race team. With the continued support of the community, we are likely to see more Olympians in the future.  The JNQ’s (Junior National Qualifier) just wrapped up this last weekend and there were over 200 kids from all over the northwest, racing at Mt. Spokane State Park.   We have world class skiing at Mt Spokane State Park Nordic area.  If you missed one of the best races of the season, Langlauf, you still have another great event coming to Mt Spokane State Park Nordic area.  March 2nd is the Nordic Challenge Loppet event.  Fitness Fanatics Nordic ski Shop will be one of the sponsors.  You can do 20, 30, or 50 Km ski.  What a great way to see more of the trails.  For registration go to:  http://www.spokanenordic.org/challenge

Winter is still in full swing in the mountains and the snow is better than it has been all year.  If you haven’t had a chance to ski the new Outer Limits trail, you are missing out on some great skiing.  The views from this trail are to die for.  It is a long trail, so if you are not up for a long ski, just go out from junction 8 and ski out until you see the incredible view, then just turn around and come back.  If you choose to ski all the way around the trail make sure you take water and some kind of food with you. I like to take Powerbar Gel Blast, Bonk Breaker bars or GU gels.  All of these work good in cold conditions and don’t freeze up.  For your water or sports drink like Hammer Heed, use an insulated bottle carrier, so your drinks don’t freeze.  Salomon makes a great one that we carry at Fitness Fanatics.

Next week I will write about other places to ski in our area.  If you have a favorite place to ski, send it to me with a short description of what you like about it.   info@fitfanatics.com

Thanks for reading and remember Fitness Fanatics Nordic Ski Shop has all the best Nordic ski Gear in the Spokane, Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint area.  We sell and rent skis as well as offering Nordic ski lessons in the classic and skate styles.

See you up on the mountain!
